Is the letter of the Holy Quran: “I am me” or “Is it God who is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Sturdy”?
Christians claimed that the saying of our Lord, the Most High,
in Surat Adh-Dhariyat (verse 58): “Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm”
is distorted
and that its correct meaning is:
“I am the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm .
” They claimed that the distortion is based on the testimony of the noble companion Abdullah ibn Masoud, may Allah be pleased with him,
and they cited the following hadith as evidence:
- The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught me {I am the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm.}

We will divide the response to this false doubt into the following points, God willing:
First,
the permissibility of reading the Holy Quran in different ways.
Second,
why was the verse written in the Uthmanic Mushaf as we read it today and not written “I am the Provider”?
Third,
the oral transmission of the Holy Verse among the reciters.
We begin with the first point, with the blessing of Allah Almighty
, which is the permissibility of reciting the Holy Quran in more than one way.
The following hadith in the two Sahihs is sufficient for us on that point:
6 - I heard Hisham bin Hakim reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the life of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I listened to his recitation, and he was reciting with many letters that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had not taught me. I almost quarreled with him during the prayer, but I was patient until he finished the prayer. Then I embraced him by his cloak and said: Who taught you this surah that I heard you recite? He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught it to me. I said: You have lied, for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught it to me in a way other than the way I recited it. So I took him and led him to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: I heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan with letters that you did not teach me. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: (Let him go, recite, O Hisham). So he recited to him the recitation that I heard him recite, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: (It was revealed thus). Then he said: (Read, O Umar). So I read the reading that he taught me, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (It was revealed in this way. This Qur’an was revealed in seven letters, so recite whatever is easy for you of it.)

7 - I heard Hisham ibn Hakim ibn Hizam reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a way other than the way I recited it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had taught it to me. I almost rushed him. Then I gave him time until he left. Then I wrapped him in my cloak. Then I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a way other than the way you taught me. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Send him. Read the recitation that you heard him recite.” The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “This is how it was revealed.” Then he said to me, “Read.” So I read. He said, “This is how it was revealed. This Qur’an was revealed in seven letters.” So recite whatever is easy for you from it.” And in another narration: I heard Hisham bin Hakim reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. And he narrated the hadith. Likewise. And he added: I almost attacked him during the prayer. So I was patient until he finished.

It is clear from the previous hadith that the beloved Mustafa approved of more than one way of reciting the Holy Quran during his lifetime.
And he used to say when he heard the different ways of recitation:
This is how it was revealed. This Quran was revealed in seven letters. So recite whatever is easy for you from it.
It is also worth noting the following hadiths
: - The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was at the watering place of Banu Ghifar when Gabriel, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to him and said: Allah the Almighty commands you to recite to your nation in one letter. He said: I ask Allah for His forgiveness and pardon. My nation cannot bear that. Then he came to him a second time and mentioned something similar until he reached seven letters. He said: Allah commands you to recite Your nation has seven letters, so whichever letter they recite it with, they have done it right

- Gabriel recited to me with one letter, so I reviewed it with him, and I kept asking him for more and he kept giving me more, until he reached seven letters.

Here we have the right to ask the Christians,
if we assume
that what was narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Masoud (I am the Provider) is one way of reading
, then what prevents (Allah is the Provider) from being another way of reading?
What is the evidence that the Prophet did not read both of them?
And perhaps the Christian will say,
I want evidence that the Prophet read (Allah is the Provider).
Here we say to the Christian,
please
read what Abdullah bin Omar (may Allah be pleased with them both
) said - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) read to me: {Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm}.

Summary of the Hadith scholar’s ruling: Authentic according to the conditions of the two sheikhs
. Here the doubt ends
and becomes like the rest of the doubts, by the grace and favor of Allah Almighty, scattered dust
