Whenever it lights up for them, they walk therein, and when it darkens for them, they stand still.} (Al-Baqarah: 20) . And the Almighty described the oil as illuminating, and described the falling of its light on what is around it as light, saying: {Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is as if there were a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is in glass, the glass as if it were a pearly star lit from a tree.} Blessed is an olive, neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. Ibn Kathir, may God have mercy on him, mentioned in his interpretation that Abdullah bin Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, said in his interpretation of the verse: The moon used to shine as the sun shines, and it is a sign of the night, then it was erased, so the blackness in the moon is the effect of that erasure . If the moon had remained burning until now, life would not have existed on Earth. However, as a result of the Earth’s continuous distance from the sun and the moon’s distance with it, the moon’s crust cooled and its light was erased and it began to derive its light from the sun to reflect it to Earth.
This fact took decades to discover. The moon was once blazing and extremely hot and luminous, then its light went out and was completely erased.
As scientific evidence of the truth of this statement, the surface of the moon is full of volcanic craters that analyses have proven were once ejecting millions of tons of molten material. Another evidence is that the interior of the moon is still blazing, and there is much scientific evidence of this fact.
In this verse, there is a statement from the Lord of Glory, the Most High, that the moon was luminous and then God erased this light, that is, removed it, and this cosmic fact was not known until recently.
